shareWell, at that time a picture had to be distributed in order for people to see it (or hear of it). And back then a homevideo release was not a given for movies that were shown so sparsely as this one was -- especially a "mere" documentary with no element more commercial than its Steve Wonder soundtrack.
At least as of today, SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS is up to a groundswell of 124 IMDb votes.
Most great films deserve a more appreciative audience than they get.
