Cause of ship wreck: Kelly or Jessie?

It seems the ship wreck was all Kelly's fault. First, she convinced her editor that she should go in Peterson's place, despite the fact that she had zero experience as a sailor (and Peterson was an experienced sailor). The night of the ship wreck, Travis is asleep. Once Courtney wakes him, he rushes up the stairs, and, upon seeing how bad things are, tells Kelly that she should have woken him up sooner. Then they crash.

Another option is that it was Jessie's fault, since he snuck on board, then promptly fell overboard, which necessitated the crew doubling back to go find him. Perhaps that storm would have been behind them had they not gone back to get Jessie.
