This Shipwreck Couldn't Happen Today

Not with the technology of cell phones, laptops and satellite internet. Just a few clicks of the mouse or a few pushes of the buttons and......they're rescued.

The trick to all those electronics is to have the means to use them. They have to be present on the boat (EPIRB), charged up, and in working order. Also if the passengers/owner/whtever has the time to get to them. An epirb is released and activated when the boat goes below the waterline where it is affixed.

And if they're in the middle of the ocean, odds are there will be no signal for the cell phone; much less on a deserted island.

I was thinking about whether this movie could still happen today. Cell phones aside, didn't they determine they were somewhere in Alaska, or near Alaska? Is that area more populated now that it is 35 years later? I wonder if they would stumble onto people if they ended up into the same place today.

They'd probably stumble into Sarah Palin and her white trash family. I'd rather face the wolves and the bears.
