Please Help
I was watching this movie this morning, laying on my ever so comfortable couch and I fell asleep. Just like that. ZZZZZZZZZ!
Someone please tell me how this movie ended.
After many years of meeting the same weekend, the last weekend shown in the movie has Alan Alda arriving and telling Ellen Burstyn that his wife had died and now he wants her to marry him. She says she can't and he says he can't be alone and is going to marry another woman (Barbara, I think) and says Goodbye and walks out the door. Ellen falls down on the bed and is crying when Alan walks back in and tells her that Barbara is 80 years old. He says something like: "Alright, I didn't think it through. I love you and we'll just have to go on having our weekends.
Sorry so sketchy, but I haven't seen the movie in years and it's just coming on today so I went to the IMDB board to read the trivia and goofs on it.
It's actually Connie, not Barbara. Not that it matters :)
shareI think one, small element that is missing from your description of the end of the movie is that George tells Doris that Helen had known about the affair for 10 years. Helen never revealed this.( this was his good story about Helen) Connie was the one who told George about his wife's knowledge of the situation. Then we find out that Helen passed away and if Doris doesn't marry him, he would probably end up with Connie who already knows about the affair and would not agree to it. Of course later, after George leaves and makes a sudden return, (while Doris is crying on the bed), he admits that Connie is 87 years old and he thought this ploy would get her to leave Harry and marry him. He then tells her he will keep coming back every year until their bones are too brittle to risk contact.
