Was anyone else wondering......

What made Alda's character fall in love with Burstyn's character the first time they met? She seemed kind of flaky and not too intelligent, though he tells her he doesn't care that she didn't finish high school. I just watched this movie again yesterday and for the life of me couldn't figure out other than a strong physical attraction, what did they have in common their first meeting? It seemed they were in two completely different worlds.

Funny -- I dvr'd this and just watched it -- having seen it only a couple of times since it came out.

I think they were both alone (emotionally) and vulnerable. A hello and a smile go a long way in an empty dining room. She might have been flaky -- yes -- but that might have been exactly what he was attracted to, and it grew from there.

His stories about his wife make her appear equally flaky (sleeping pills in her ears, the Dutch ambassador), so apparently he like his women flaky.

And she showed genuine interest in him. That goes a long way.

I think she's very intelligent, just not well-educated yet. I think she was just so straightforward and honest and spoke her mind. Plus, according to their conversation, she was dynamite in the sack.

Let's not forget the old axiom: opposites attract!

Some men just like their women dumb and naive.. I don't think he really loved her on their first meeting, they had a physical attraction and he wanted that again next year (because let's face it, he had nothing better to do on his business trip).. The love only developed over the years. What I wondered most about what his figure of them having sex 113 times in 26 years (and she was pregnant for one of those years)... That's like 4/5 times every single weekend!!
