Herbert Lom is a genius

Yes, it's a pretty cheesy film, but you've gotta love Herbert Lom's comic acting (rivalling that of Sellers, in my opinion). The scene where he's trying to give a tribute to the "dead" Inspector Clouseau had me incapacitated. If you watch get to see it - check out the bit where he says "we are here to say..(pause)..goodbye". And on the word "goodbye" he glances at the coffin with a sly look that combines happiness, relief yet still some hatred...absolute genius.

i've always liked Lom's Dreyfus, but i think sometimes the jokes with him get a bit redundant... the way he winks when he's going crazy, though, gets me every time! :-)

Peter Sellers is a comic genious but I do not think the series would of worked without Herbert Lom as Clouseus long suffering boss Charles Dreyfuss. The winking of the eye and the cracking-up laugh,Brilliant. The first pp movie had its moments but it was missing Lom (as well as clouseu man servant cato). That is the reason I do not rank this film as one of my favorite pp movies.

Yes, I cannot see another actor playing inspector Dreyfus since he became as integral to the popularity of the movies as Peter Sellers was as Clouseau. One can easily identify with being a man with the knowledge Clouseau is a total moron with no clue about nothing and yet the rest of the world sees him as a 20'th century Sherlock Holmes. As Dreyfus put it brilliantly to his shrink: "There's not any man like him anywhere in the world". In Return of the Pink Panther Lom and Sellers delivered these immortal lines: Dreyfus:"The man was the look-out man for the bankrobbers". Clouseau:"That's impossible. How can a blind man be a look-out?". Dreyfus:"HOW can an IDIOT be a policeman,ANSWER ME THAT!" Clouseau:"It's very simple. All he has to do is enlist". Clouseau didn't even realize Dreyfus had insulted him.Poor Dreyfus.Lom did well as him.
