A similsr 1950s book?

As a boy around 1960 I read a library book something like this. Only have a vague recollection of some danger at an observatory outside London and influences from space having an effect on people. Cannot recall title. A phrase like The Colossus Of London comes to mind but could be way off. I found the book very suspenseful.
