Why were they walking in the water?

I mean, they have all the world to walk on, and yet, they decide to walk in that swamp like they have no other choice, even knowing there's a creature in there that killed the blonde girl. I am not taking this movie too seriously, I just found that funny and I wonder if there is an explanation other that to create a "stress factor" for the viewer? :D
