Yes it is a comedy

When I first watched Piranha as a young teenager , I didn't get the jokes I thought it was a proper horror movie. Then I watched it again a few years ago and thought, it is definitely a comedy.A friend of mine watched it for the first time last year and he didn't get the jokes.I had an argument with him trying to convince him that it was a comedy,Oh Jeez !

I would definately say it has some odd, comedic moments, but to say its a flat out comedy -- I would have to disagree. Just look at the major attack scenes in the second half of the film... the deaths are taken very seriously, particularly one at the children's camp.

Yeah - it still manages to build some major suspense and get some good horror moments in despite the great satire 'n comedic parts.

Still watching this film decades after its release - the mark of a classic!

Which was the bigger Jaws spoof: this or all the Jaws sequels?

reply

Jaws 2 was the only really decent sequel. It wasn't bad because it had 3 out of five of the original cast.Roy Scheider Lorraine Gary and Murray Hamilton. It's a pity that Richard Dreyfus didn't come back for Jaws 2 apparently he seriously considered it.Also Jaws 2 had John Williams back to create a new score which at points trumped the original score.Jaws 3 and Jaws the revenge had different composers.Jeannot Szwarc did a fine job on Jaws 2 and a lot of people like it.
Jaws 3 was a good concept but a terrible production Jaws the revenge was a joke Michael Caine was asked about Jaws the Revenge and he said he never even watched it but he joked that he got a nice house out of the money he earned on it.

It's a horror film which doesn't take itsself seriously. Very tonge-in-cheek, plenty of amusing moments but also plenty of good horror beats. It's great.

Which is to say, it's a Joe Dante film.

It has some weird jokes, but it's definitely not a spoof. It's a rip-off of Jaws.
