Rowdy Roddy piper the profesional wrestler

He was on the "uncredited" list, wasn't he? I do not remember his part. Most of the wrestling segments were very short.

When Winkler is playing the Nazi wrestler on the tour, Piper is the guy that he keeps hitting in the head with his helmet.

reply

I remember that part, but it was a long time ago.

Piper plays Leatherneck Joe, a supposed war hero, who takes on Andy's Nazi character, a take-off of Adolf Hitler's name (can't remember the exact name). His role consists of waving, taking off his jacket then running into the helmet Winkler carries. Not quite up to They Live. What I find hilarious is that Piper is wearing his trademark tartan wrestling trunks, which has no connection to his character's gimmick. Piper was a top draw in LA at this time, but relatively unknown outside the territory. His chief rival was Chavo Guerrero, who is featured in Winkler's first match. Gene LeBell, brother of promoter Mike LeBell, is the champion in the climactic match. Gene also worked as a stuntman and appears in several tv shows and movies as a wrestler, referee, or martial artist (he is a judo expert). Supposedly, Gene choked out Steven Seagal on the set of one of his movies.

Piper didn't really become a big name unitl he worked in Georgia and the Carolinas. That led to Vince McMahon recruiting him to become the top heel in the WWF, during it's early expansion. Piper had major exposure as the heel color commentator on Georgia Championship Wrestling, which was seen nationally on Superstation WTBS.

Chavo gets to show off more moves in his match, plus he gets a line or two and a credit.

Reiner had previously featured LA wrestling star "Classy" Freddie Blassie on an episode of the Dick Van Dyke Show, in the first season. Blassie is billed as the World Champion, which would have been the WWA title, which was only recognized in LA and the early days of Japanese wrestling. The irony was that the show was set in New York and the World Champion who would have appeared in that area was NWA World Champion "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers.

He was good in this film, but I liked him better as Cyndi Lauper's father in the "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" video.

That was Lou Albano, not Roddy Piper. Piper was involved in the whole "Rock 'N' Wrestling Connection business, which built up to the first Wrestlemania. He did appear in the Goonies music video, though.

"Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!"

You're right: It was Lou Albano in the Cyndi Lauper video. I stand corrected.
