Miserable, horrible

Could any actor portray Andy? and be likable? I really don't think so. I think the scriptwriter Gordon shot himself in the foot, so there's really not much anyone could do to save this movie. Andy was so obnoxious, unfunny, and mean, I just hit the fast forward button after about 15 minutes into it just to see if there were any more recognizable actors. Stay away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is no "off" position on the genius switch.

I couldn't agree more. Andy is an obnoxious jerk and his schtick is cute at first but then it becomes annoying. One of the big problems I had with the film was accepting the fact that Kim Darby's character would fall in love with him so easily. I can see her admiring his belief in himself but he is such a tool how could she have any feelings for him. There is a scene where they are out together and he kicks her out of the car and then keep asking her back in. After that he should have been history. Another problem I had with the film back in 1978 was that the advertisements weighed heavily on Winkler portraying this Gorgeous George type wrestler when the film only deals with that in its last 10 minutes. This was a real let down.

I was coming here to post the same thing.
Henry Winkler is SO likable, and even he couldn't save this film.
The main problem is definitely that there is nothing to like about Andy. I can't believe no one saw this. If an audience doesn't like or relate to their main character, they don't care about them.
I would have done some serious rewrites to show more times when Andy was vulnerable and likable.
Every time Mary left him I was rooting for her. Just hoping she would really divorce him.

I don't think anyone could have saved that character. He was a douche who thought he was funnier than he was....
