Lily Tomlin as a romantic lead????

Really?? She has never had any kind of sex appeal. She's never been anything other than comic relief in movies like 9 to 5. What a horrible casting decision. Might have been a decent movie had they casted a more charismatic, beautiful, seductive woman. Sadly, this was a theme for John Travolta's late 70s offerings (Karen Lynn Gorney, Lily Tomlin, Debra Winger, et al.) Women who just were not glamorous or enticing enough to warrant female lead parts opposite a star the magnitude of John Travolta.

i've always thought she's goofy-looking, especially since the only things i've seen her in recently are EASTBOUND AND DOWN, and DAMAGES,
but she's actually pretty in this flick

One thing you must know is that this movie was written and directed by Jane Wagner who has been Lily Tomlin's partner for over 30 years. MBM was project that both of them wanted to do and John Travolta had been a HUGE fan of LT and wanted very much to do a movie with her so....they cast him. From all accounts I've read about it, LT did NOT have to do any auditioning for this movie and they choose John to be Lily's romantic lead which was an obvious choice in the late 70's.

Does that help you understand?

How was it an obvious choice? He wasn't the only actor in the late 70's who was popular. Consider that Ms Wagner may over-estimate Tomlin's attractiveness, lovers and all. Also, it helps to not cast romantic leads that look like brother & sister.

You don't think that Debra Winger is enticing or glamorous? Or that Lily Tomlin could be? You're an idiot.
