For those revisiting this after recent versions

I had fond memories of this, particularly of Perkins' performance. On seeing it again it is amazing how well it stands up. The acting is superb. The locations are brilliant, (and how refreshing to see real stones and streets in our cgi overworked days) and the costumes are stunning.

Gielgud has some brief but wonderful moments. The moment when he realises he has said the wrong thing to his grandson is a lesson in measured subtlety.

Regardless of its diminished stature against recent blockbusters, this is a wonderful film, and all concerned should be very proud of what was achieved with it.
