Modern Film

I think of films like Midnight Express and it makes me ask: Are there films this powerful made today?

reply

No. I don't think modern audiences would understand movies like this. They need something more flashy and gimmicky, with a faster-moving plot and not so much characterization. A stock character in an explosive environment is what they want.

I started to think of other films this hard hitting and one that immediately came to mind was Come and See (1985). I agree with your above statements, but I wish we were wrong.

Come and See was grueling! The only film in the last 20 years I can think of with a similar impact is The Road (2009)

Yes. Mustang, Loving, Maudie, Three Billboards ... I guess it depends on what you mean by powerful but there is more than the latest franchise or franchise wannabe out there - or there was when we still went to the cinema. Then again the four I've listed I caught in an Art House cinema I'm lucky enough to have at a reasonable distance so maybe the problem is what gets in to the local multiplex cinemas.
