How can over 2000 ppl give this movie the lowest possible score of 1/10 there should be some rule like you can't vote more then+/- 5 of the average score. I can understand someone not likeing the movie but 1 would mean it was just terrible and compeletely unwatchable, if this movie was worth a 1 then where would worse movies end up, because i do believe there most be worse movies, no mather the perspective...

that's why imdb use weighted rate, not average. in fact, 10% of 1s don't make such impact and the score (7.6) is much higher than arithmetic average (7.2).

shareI love this movie, but sister absolutely hates it, saying that the movie glorifies a drug smuggler in some sense. Some people may see this movie and feel that Billy Hayes deserved what he had coming because of the decisions he made. I wouldn't be surprised if those 1 votes are from people who disliked his actions.

Come on! Can such a movie among the best ever? For anybody? I have given a lot of 10/10 myself but most of those movies are among the best 250 of imdb and usually, they are not new.
"Midnight Express" is a movie full of stereotypes. Did you actually realize that there is not one single good Turk in the movie.
Watch the youtube video of the real Bill Hayes. He himself hated that in the movie.

There are people who will give a 1 to a movie just because they don't like the politics (or whatever) of someone involved. I'm sure there are also people who will, for example, give a 10 to every John Wayne or Charlton Heston movie just because he's their hero.
Netflix has a much better rating system, where they examine the ratings given by other people with similar movie tastes. From this, they give you a customized rating that tries to predict how much you will like the movie.
The thing is, not all people should have the right to vote real life, and in other things IMDB.
Not everyones opinion should be taken serious.

Exactly. There are as many "undeserving" (whatever that means) 10s on imdb as there are 1s - many more actually. And although some people use it in ways many of us wouldn't think of as appropriate, I think it's as good a system as we're going to get. I haven't used Netflix, but I seem to recall reading that the predicted rating wasn't that useful at generating good recommendations. Whatever the case, it's not quite comparing the same thing, since Netflix is a recommendation-driven site that is geared towards the individual user, whereas imdb has only marginal recommendation features and is geared more to a general user base rather than tailored to each of us.
