The organ music - ??

During the scene were the French cop is inspecting the structure of the cathedral from the outside , an organist is playing inside. Does anyone know if the music was written for the film ( and if so is it available anywhere ? ) or is it / was it an existing piece of music ? either way it sounds fantastic ! :-)

Did you have any joy on this? I have bought the Medusa Touch soundtrack promo and the organ music is unfortunately absent from the track list.

reply

No - have not heard anything further . Pity it wasn't on that promo :-)

I've never seen this movie (although I'd like to), because it isn't available in the U.S., but I think I can answer your question anyway. The organ music in the scene you describe is probably one of two organ pieces written for the film by the film's composer Michael J. Lewis. Michael J. Lewis is one of those terrific film composers who seems to have gone largely unrecognized, despite his talents, in an industry that is overstuffed with people.

These two pieces are called Organ Primo and Organ Secundo. They are not included on the promo CD that Chris mentioned earlier in the thread. I don't know why. However, they are available on a compilation CD called Orchestral Film Music 1969-1994 composed by Michael J. Lewis.

Two warnings at this point are pertinent:

1) There are at least two versions of this Orchestral Film Music compilation floating around, with basically the same title and cover art, and both released under the same Pen Dinas record label (Michael J. Lewis' own label). Both are legitimate releases, but one is 2-Disc and the other is 1-Disc. Only the 2-Disc version has Organ Primo and Organ Secundo on it.

If you look at this page, you can see the track listing for each version:

http://www.soundtrackcollector.com/catalog/soundtrackdetail.php?movieid=8205

The one you want is the one at the top of the page that says 2-CD. (Organ Primo and Organ Secundo are on Disc 1, Tracks 5 and 8, respectively.) Notice the difference in the tracks on the 1-CD release at the bottom of the page. One time I saw a seller on eBay selling the 1-CD release without advertising it as such, so I had to ask him to confirm which one he was selling (which he did do, and added the info to the listing).

2) The Orchestral Film Music compilations are re-recordings with a different ensemble (though still with Michael J. Lewis conducting), so if you want the exact performance as in the film, you are out of luck. The promo CD contains original recordings (the performance from the film), but as mentioned above the two solo organ cues are missing from it. The re-recordings are well done, however, so this may not be worth fussing over.

You can buy the 2-Disc Orchestral Film Music compilation directly from Michael J. Lewis's own website:

http://www.bluediamondmusic.com/Film%20Music%20CDs.htm

It's pretty expensive, so your interest in buying it will probably depend on how you feel about the other music on the compilation. Fortunately, Lewis' website has brief clips of some of the tracks on the CD, so you can get a taste of what all the other music that you haven't heard before is like.

One other thing to consider: La-La Land Records recently put out a commercial release of another Lewis score called Theater of Blood (or Theatre of Blood in its original British spelling). Like The Medusa Touch, Theatre of Blood originally had a promo release CD. La-La Land's commercial CD was basically identical to the promo: no new music, just remastered sound, a different track breakdown, and a new booklet with liner notes. So if The Medusa Touch ever gets a similar upgrade from them, it will probably be essentially identical to the promo CD also. But I suppose there is a slim chance that they will add the missing organ cues to a commercial La-La Land release, if one ever materializes.

If you want more information about Lewis or these CDs, post back here. Or you can also ask a gentleman who goes by the moniker of Blofeld's Cat, whom I nominate as the Internet's resident expert on Michael J. Lewis music (along with the music of many other film composers). He maintains a terrific, scholarly blog:

http://blofeldscat.livejournal.com

And he has an entry about The Medusa Touch's music in particular as part of a Seven Scores feature on Michael J. Lewis:

http://blofeldscat.livejournal.com/tag/seven%20scores%20MJL

(Scroll down to Medusa Touch, but do also check out the other scores if you're interested.)

It was through an e-mail conversation with Blofeld's Cat that I originally learned, among other things, that the two organ cues are not on the promo CD (which I don't own), but are on the 2-Disc Orchestral Film Music compilation (which I do). On his blog, he often does exhaustive analysis of where particular film music cues play in a film. So if anyone can tell you exactly where each organ cue plays in The Medusa Touch, he can. And his blog is well worth reading in general.

Hope all these details are helpful to you or anyone else who checks this post in the future. Good luck!
