True Fact?

I remember having watched this movie a long time ago. I also remember that at the end of it, there was a text saying that in Japan, I think, there was a case of someone with a fetus growing in his chest or something like that. Am I wrong?

reply

No, you're not wrong, although I remember the fact being at the beginning of the movie.

reply

No you are not wrong. The fact was at the end of the movie. i also read the book some lifeties ago. And at the end of the bok they mention this fact from 1969.

I think it's called a parasitic twin, but that might only apply to the fetuses that don't keep growing.

reply

Oh yeah, sure it's true. Don't you believe everything printed in The National Enquirer?

reply

It is a rare but true syndrome!

Parasitic Twin Pregnancy (Vanishing Twin Syndrome)

Parasitic or Heteropagus Twins are asymmetric conjoined identical or monozygotic twins in which the tissues of a severely defective twin (parasite) are dependent on the cardiovascular system of the other, largely intact twin for survival.

The estimated incidence of heteropagus parasitic twins is approximately 1 per 1 million live births. Isolated case reports comprise most of published work on this rare congenital anomaly.

But that has nothing to do with this movie.

I think you are the one a bit confused. Parasitic twins are very real multiple documented medial condition.

This movie ends with a bit of text referencing one of those cases. While the concept depicted in this film (and the book it based upon) are VERY different from the case the text refers to, it is clearly where the story writer got the idea from.

I think you let yourself get fooled by the way they phrased it to make it sound more like it did in the movie. Which was probably the idea, because no Misquamacus and a parasitic twin are very different. But that is to expected. Many real life issues sometimes "inspire" fiction, doesn't always mean you should expect the fiction to play it that close. This movie clearly doesn't, and I hope everyone who would be on a message board talking about it could figure that part out.
