Film location

I would love to hear more about the area where the film was shot. In the movie it's suppose to be the Catskills in New York. But the spot is Blue Lake, California. Does anybody know if those 'cabins' are still there? The house?

Who cares? This movie was TERRIBLE! Hopefully they burned the cabins to kill any memory of the movie.

Hey hairyhand, I live about 90 minutes south of Blue Lakes (in Sebastopol, CA), and my family vacationed at the Le Trianon resort every year, starting in the late 70's until the early 90's. The first time we went, we stayed in the same cabin Hopkins's character stayed. My brother and I immediately recognized the lake as being in the movie 'Magic' but my parents didn't believe us until years later, when we saw the film again. Also, I found an interview with Hopkins talking about making the movie at Blue Lakes. The lakes are shaped like an hourglass, with a thin stream dividing the two lakes (hence the name Blue Lakes, plural). The lakes are small, and speed-boats, jet-skis, and water-skiing is prohibited. It's mainly a fishing and swimming lake. There are a few resorts up and down, with Le Trianon being on the western end of the lakes. I haven't been up there in 10 years or so, but the last time I was there, the cabins were still there. The cabin that Hopkins was in was moved inland a bit, but there are 20 or so other cabins. The house that Ann Margaret lived in was moved away. I was about 10 years old that first summer that we stayed there, and I was kinda scared to swim in the lake, because we had seen 'Magic' and Fats gave me nightmares - haha!

Hope this helps.

I live in Lake County about 7 miles from Blue Lakes. In fact, both my son and my daughter were employed at Le Trianon Resort, where Magic was filmed, during their summers home from college, for a total of at least 7 summers. The scuttlebutt among the employees was that the cabin in which Corky stayed was built specially for the movie and was taken down after filming. It is certainly no longer there. The Lodge building burned down in 1978, the year I moved to Lake County. My wife's family frequently camped at Le Trianon in the 1950s and 1960s, but about 2004 the resort banned overnight camping due to the noise and mess too many campers were making. There are a few cabin rentals available, but most of the income is from "seasonals" who park their motor homes or travel trailers there for the summer. Day use fees are reasonable and the swimming and fishing are great!

From what I have been reading on Ukiah Expats on Facebook everything is still there. I grew up 9 miles from Le Trianon and frequently visited there.I moved out of the area in 1971 except for visits back. The lakes are volcanic in origin and the scary part is about 50 feet out from the shore or less the bank just drops off into oblivion. A mini sub around the 60's or so found the depth between 700-800 feet. The school used is still in existence in Ukiah which was once Pomolita but later was changed to an elementary school called Yokayo. Ukiah built a new high school and moved Pomolita to the old high school leaving Yokayo to re-open on the old Pomolita site. The entire area around Blue Lakes is beautiful and worth visiting. Even bears have been seen in the area. Primarily in Lake County and Ukiah in Northern CA. The first lake shot where they are coming up over a hill in the taxi is the north end of Lake Mendocino however, about 12 miles from Blue Lake but still on HWY 20.

Wow, amazon423, that's amazing that the lake is so deep! My parents always told us it was a deep lake, with under-currents, and to be very careful while swimming; however, I didn't know it was THAT deep! I haven't been up there since around 1999, but would love to go back and do more trout-fishing. I guess I've outgrown my fear of Fats - haha!

that's all very cool contributions from everyone (except for the jagmo who thinks this movie is terrible) ... really looks like a beautiful place to just have a quiet vacation with a stack of books to read sitting by the lake ... i'm sure it's fan-fu**in-tastic in the autumn when the leaves turn ... i've been near there having driven thru the smokey mountains and the blue ridge and one time was on just the peak day in autumn and it really is breathtaking to get up on a mountain and just look out over almost nothing but trees ... incredible ...

take care,
