Audience statistics #3

I saw this on August 28th at Anthology Film Archives in New York City as part of their "That's Sexploitation!" series. It was shown on 35mm and the print had seen better days. It was choppy and it was obvious that between reels bits had been lost.

The film was shown in the smaller theater at this venue, and it was pretty full. There were about 27 people there, 17 guys and 10 girls. About 7 couples (male/female) were there including me and my girlfriend, though I know at least one of them were not a dating couple. Who knew this would be a good date movie? One of the single girls was sort of angry and told people to "shut the *beep* up" at some point, supposedly because some of us were laughing at the ridiculousness of the acting, sets, fashion, funny statements or other ridiculous things in this movie. Although I cannot in any way be certain, it was possible this was a transsexual, and she was insulted or upset at what she perceived to be us laughing at a serious matter. Of course we were not laughing at the plight of the transsexual, just the ridiculousness of the movie and the surroundings.

When the sex change operation came on as expected many of the people, especially the men, got severely uncomfortable. One guy near me was looking to his left and trying to ignore the screen, while another guy was covering his eyes. Always fun to watch people squirm.

All in all I think most of the audience had a good time, it was an enjoyable evening.

I know this is an old post, but I'm curious what made you think she may have been a transsexual. It's funny because I sometimes read the Craigslist ads in different cities for fun, and some men that post on the 'Missed Connections' section will say how they are hoping to contact such-and-such transsexual they saw someplace. Though usually they appear to notice her being trans because she dresses like a sexy hooker or hot gutter slut, therefore she must be a transsexual. What I do notice is they never seem to say, "Oh yeah, I saw you at Wal-Mart the other day, and you were a big, masculine, manly looking woman that could be spotted a mile away as a male. I'd love to meet you and we can get together and have fun!" Although, that would probably be more likely, LOL!

Let's see.....

In 2014 I saw over 400 movies in the theater. This year I have seen about 300 or so. The post is from August of 2013, so I probably saw another 100 or so in 2013 after that. So 800 films in theaters since then means my memory of this incident is very very limited.

To be honest, one of the reasons I rate movies on imdb is to remember what I have seen. Sometimes when someone replies to a post I have written, I do not even remember writing it. Sometimes I am surprised by what I wrote!

I know I saw this at Anthology Film Archives, and in the post I mentioned it was the smaller theater downstairs. That theater can get a little hot, and if there were 27 people there it was probably about half full. The movie going crowd, what is left of it in NYC, is an interesting bunch of weirdos, freaks, nerds, geeks and misfits. Also a bunch of college students and hipsters. Any one of those people can be annoying or annoyed at any given moment, leading to all sorts of outbursts and fights.

Needless to say, this can be started by anything from talking too loudly, laughing at the wrong moments, or snarky comments. Considering a lot of what I see is fringe stuff, horror, exploitation, and what not, you would think people would be a bit more open minded, but many people are not.

So for this film all I remember is someone was getting VERY angry about us laughing at the absolute cheesiness of the film. Now, if you have seen a Doris Wishman film you probably know these are cheese fests that are pretty damned funny. This wasn't directed at me or my girlfriend directly, more at the audience in general that was laughing.

Now, to answer the specific question, why did I think this might be a transsexual? I have no clue at this point, it's just been too long. But I generally don't assume these things lightly, so I can surmise that either this person seemed VERY personally insulted by the laughter, or that they looked like they might be transsexual.

I feel like I have to give a bit of personal info here, to explain further. I live in NYC, where there is a fairly large population of trans people. I have had more than a few trans friends in my life, both in real life and online. Just like there is some sort of gaydar that people have, there is a trans radar that some people have. If you know enough trans people, or have hung out with some, you start to pick up on the small cues that can help you to identify someone who is trans. Am I 100% certain? No, especially not in this case, since I made it clear I wasn't sure even in the post. Do I have a good track record? Yes, I do, usually noticing before most people I know.

Side note here, there is a regular at this theater that I am pretty sure is trans or has some sort of gender fluid situation going on, and she is loud, talks to herself and possibly smokes crack sometimes as well. Now, I can't say whether or not this was the same person, but you never know.

Last bit of info I will share. In NYC, we have always had a decent sized population of trans people. Back in the day there were many drag queen shows at various places all over the city. There was even a bar uptown you could go to if you wanted to pick one up (and probably pay for sex with them at the end of the night). I have seen ones that were less noticeable, 100% passable, and beautiful. I have also seen ones that were dressed like sexy hookers or gutter sluts, as you so visually described them. Lastly, I have seen the large, hulking manly woman walking around in women's clothes as well. We have had a full range of trans people, one of the many reasons why NYC is such a fun and vibrant place, you never know who you will meet or what they are about!

Wow, it seems like it would be rather scary to be in a movie theatre with her.

Jackson Heights I've heard. I once read an article where they can get their hormones and doctor bills for free. Even on a sliding fee where I live it can be quite expensive.

Well, still better than getting shot during a Batman movie, but we tend to have characters in NYC, not dangerous psychopaths.

Jackson Heights? I have not heard, but since I am not trans nor do I need hormones it would not be something I would be aware of. Jackson Heights used to be an Italian neighborhood if I am not mistaken, and there is a large Indian (from India) population there now.

Are you in Singapore?

How do you see 400 movies in the theatre a year? You watch on average over 1 movie a day in the theatre, every single day? How is this even possible? You make a point to fit in a movie, and alot of times 2 or more every day of the year??!! Do you work in the industry? Just curious what would motivate someone to go to a theatre that frequently!!
