2 1/2 stars

You realize, upon reading the most recent review of Laserblast and looking at the top of the page again, that Laserblast received 2 1/2 stars not only from Leonard Maltin but also from IMDB. So yes, apparently a lot of sane people have given this movie 2 1/2 stars.

reply

Too bad Leonard rates his films out of 4 stars, and IMDb rates them out of 10 stars.

reply

So Leonard Maltin really did rate this two and a half stars? Wow. MST3K really did a good riff during the credits as to which movies were better and worse than Laserblast according to Leonard Maltin.

reply

How on earth could Maltin have given this 2-1/2 stars? Was that a typo in his book? Has he ever explained his rating?

reply

I can remember reading about this film before it was spoofed on MST3K - books about sci-fi films tended to give it middling reviews, saying that the effects were surprisingly good for such a low budget. The Aurum Film Encyclopaedic of Science Fiction (which was published in 1984) starts off by praising the sequence where Billy blows up a Star Wars sign, but is otherwise unimpressed ("the film lacks the cult appeal of its companion piece, the Band-produced The End of the World (1977)"). It's not a "worst film of all time" kind of review; the book trashes Robot Monster and Plan Nine, for example, but Laserblast just comes and goes.

On the other hand, it has Cheryl "Rainbeaux" Smith in it. That's worth at least a star. Although she keeps her clothes on (boo).

reply

2 1/2 stars for Charles Band and his clay-animated aliens.

He also gave 2 1/2 stars to a little film called The Shawshank Redemption.

According to the Leonard Maltin Movie Guide:

Laserblast- 2 1/2 stars

Taxi Driver- 2 stars

reply

Shakes head. I really don't know what to say to that. Really.

Maltin doesn't actually write all the reviews for the guide. Too big a task for him.

I wonder if some low paid intern with a grudge was responsible for the Laserblast review, giving it a ridiculous review out of spite.
