Chief Brody

Does anyone think Chief Brody got his job back as police chief after he saved the day?

reply

I'd like to think that he was offered his old job back, and I'd like to think that Ellen's scumbag boss took it on the chin for his treatment of Brody (the Mayor is somewhat off the hook, per the deleted scene where he objects to firing Martin). If the Chief took back the job, Hendricks would probably just breathe a deep sigh of relief. But I'm not so sure that Martin and/or Ellen would want the job back again. Martin, especially, was in the position to tell the whole council to take a flying fu8k. His dignity and veracity had been greatly tested and offended. He might just tell the entire island to go to hell. The only factor would be the Brodys' feeling about moving away from the island. So the problem would then become an issue of staying on the island, trying not to "live for payback", and trying some new, non-law enforcement profession somewhere within that small community. I see Brody just telling the town to stuff it and moving away.

I'm going to search for that deleted scene. Thank you!

Hope you find it - they're on a DVD I have of Jaws 2 - I think these deleted scenes are its only special features (i.e., no commentaries, etc.)...

I never thought about this before, but now you mention it...yes, he may well have seen all of this as a sign to move on even though he turned out to be right.

I find it more likely that he did get his old job back and the selfish property developer is the one who was pushed off the island. After all, his son went on to become police chief by the start of Jaws 4 so a) the family never left Amity and b) there was no lingering bad blood between either the Brody's or local government.

Yeah, I always just assumed the council had to eat some major crow and give a big public apology/reward to Brody to get him to stay. He's popular with the locals, knows his job, and is about as brave as you can ask for. The mayor (by the deleted scenes) didn't want him gone anyway.

I kinda wish they'd stuck with some of the plot elements from the novel.

In the book, Peterson isn't really a bad guy. Brody actually likes him at first; he's bringing a casino to the town that will revitalize the place after the disaster that happened with the first movie. Thing is, it turns out the money for the casino is coming from the mafia, and Brody's not happy about that.

In addition, there's a NY cop on vacation there and he's a total ass-hat. Brody finds him shooting up the beach right about the time the ski boat gets wiped out, and blames him for it. The state threatens to hold up the gambling license, and everyone wants Brody to drop the charges. He won't do it, so there's this worry that the mafia will kill him to get him out of the way.

Funny thing is, during all this, Brody never knows there's a shark. The guy who developed the photos kept them a secret. He only finds out that there is a shark about much later in the story, when a body (the diver Andrews, looking for a lost sonar bouy) washes up after the big boat race started...the race all the kids were in.

Would have made an interesting movie, I think, if handled right. Less teen drama.

Whores will have their trinkets.
