It it wasn't so funny it might be scary.

Is this what passed for a scary movie in 1978?

reply

apparently not judging by it's 4.7 rating.

I think it definitely would have been scary in 1978, but in the '90's and 2000's it is not as scary.

Just think, 30 or 40 years from now, people will be saying "This was actually considered scary back in 2012?" about our horror films today.

People already say that about horror movies today.

I didn't see anything in it that was even remotely funny, unless there was a joke said by someone. I was scared when I saw it then and it still scares me.

It might have scared someone. I'll gamble $1,000 it didn't do as good as Halloween or Invasion of The Body Snatchers at the box office.

For me, what the movie was about was more scary. Just the idea of deformed infants killing when they are scared and no one knowing how to keep them from doing that.

I agree, as with any movie we should be drawn in by the concept as well as what's actually happening on the screen. As modern movies have proved, having the ability to make something look "real" doesn't necessarily make it good. There are a few things about this movie that do not work, but it's still got a compelling story. It is about every parent's fear that something could be terribly wrong with their baby, taken to an outrageous extreme (they kill, and are hunted by the authorities).

Not really. The films people actually found scary back then, like The Exorcist or Hell House or Halloween, still hold up fantastically; Larry Cohen's work has always been fun schlock rather than grueling terror, and that's what you need to expect going into any of his movies, whether it's this or Q.
