What an ugly looking film, and Donald Sutherland looks horrific, I'm so thankful the ugliness in film of the 60's, 70's, and 80's is gone forever. Hopefully.

It's a wonderful, suspenseful, atmospheric, surprising film, much better than the original. It's not meant to be beautiful, but it has a certain elegance.
And interesting from a historical perspective, as it both shows us what San Francisco was like during the seventies, and a reminder that not all seventies fashion was extreme disco looks.
I saw the original and it was far more suspenseful than this.
shareI've seen both several times, and the seventies version is tight and suspenseful, with much better cinematography, sound, score and acting. It's a sophisticated film, while the fifties film is clunky and nearly amateurish.
But of course, I give the fifties film all the credit in the world for originality!

Of course B&W has always had less grain than color. But who want to experience the world in shades of gray? Film snobs!
Please! Michael Chapman's cinematography is great! Beautifully atmospheric, and adds so much to the movie.
Film stock of the 1970's wasn't as light sensitive as it is now, or even as light sensitive as it was in the 1990's. That is why it shifts towards the red end of the spectrum in lower light.
80e films ugly? I can see the unpolished uglyness of the 70s which works to make it look gritty for crime dramas like The Godfather for example and the ugly fairness of the 60s especially in Hollywood but there are exceptions like The Sound of Music or Purple Noon. But 80s don't have that look you're referring to imo.
