I think a sequel could work

The aliens float from planet to planet. They must have natural enemies across the universe.

Despite in 2 cases reusing an old actor every version has been a REMAKE as opposed to a sequel.

My take on them is that they take over the dominant life form of any world they invade which on Earth is humans. Except for that fluke near the end dogs and other animals were not "podded". I find it odd that you did not have a whole city of dogs freaking out over their owners being replaced by pods. Animals would notice even easier than people.

I would also assume that the pods can only eliminate a victim when they are in their most vulnerable condition which is sleep for humans.

In the movie ALIENS I joked when I saw what looked like pods that it was the body snatchers snatching the aliens. It would be interesting to see other species in the universe getting attacked by the pods.

I think a cool idea for a sequel would be a book that takes place right after the ending of the 1956 movie and has Miles continue as a main protagonist and also involves the military efforts to eradicate the pods and save the planet.

The 1993 version could also have a sequel novel since the teen girl and her boyfriend escaped.

I am not sure how the 1978 version could have one.

How about a PREQUEL that explains how they evolved in the first place?

No, it would be like the thing and ruin the mystery.

I think sequels like Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, etc. would work out best. The same situation but different people, settings, and perspectives.

I always thought it'd be an interesting idea for a sequel to explore the Earth after the invasion, showing how the Pod People go about daily earth life doing the very things humans had done, as their sole purpose for invading Earth was for their survival. I'd imagine it as like I Am Legend, having a human protagonist having learnt to living amongst the Pod People, but upon being discovered to still be human, has to fight to survive an overwhelming hoard of Pod People.
