Diane Keaton's smoking...
Am I the only one who noticed that even though Diane Keaton played a smoker in this movie, she never once exhales after taking drags on her cigarettes?

'We gotta get outa here before one of those things kills Guy'
They don't exhale? That's impossible.

I have not seen any reviewer or woody himself comment on that the character smokes. But as Keaton probably does/did not smoke, we have to think it was there for some purpose.
I would venture a guess that Woody wanted the character to smoke to show her agitation with life.
I guess it could also show self-destructiveness. Renata fears that she herself is reaching the same age of when her mother had had her first troubles.
I read years ago in an interview with her that she smoked because Allen felt it fit the character. She was trying to destroy herself and that's one way. It's true--she never exhaled. I'm not even a smoker and I caught that. Still it fits the character perfectly (I think).

scene after dinner (and eve's present opening) frederick disparages keaton about her reaction to his latest mediocrity while pouring wine. Diane hasn't lit the cig yet and all of sudden cut! to joey saying to keaton about her poem called 'wondering' and the ciggy is lit. is this continuity problem? just wondering...
