Death of an Interior Decorator

I watched this movie just last night and I know that the band Death Cab For Cutie wrote a song about this movie. I tried comparing the lyrics to the movie and I don't know if all of it is parallel. But I'd like to list the lyrics out for the people who have watched the movie.

"you were the mother of three girls so sweet
who stormed through your turnstile and climbed to the street
but after conception, your body lay cold
and withered through autumn and you found yourself old

can you tell me why you have been so sad?

he took a lover on a faraway beach
while you arranged flowers and chose color schemes

can you tell me why you have been so sad?

the girls were all there
they traded their vows
the youngest one glared with furrowed brows
they tenderly kissed, then cut the cake
the bride then tripped and broke the vase
the one you thought would span the years
so perfectly placed below the mirror
arriving late, you clean the debris
and walked into the angry sea

and it felt just like falling in love again.

can you tell me why you have been so sad?"

-Death Cab For Cutie [Death of an Interior Decorator]

I wouldn't say the youngest one glared though. She wasn't the youngest.

That was amazing the lyrics matched 100% of the plot. Either the song was entirely based off the movie or it's just another strange coincidence.

What a beautiful song whether you know of the movie or not. I'm going to look into this band and am curious to hear what the song sounds like. I guess they were inspired by the movie which is nice compared to the inspirations of alot of other bands.

I really like this movie -- very realistic I think and shows things that happen behind closed doors. Geraldine Page is always absolutely flawless.

I read an article about the band some time ago on knotmag.com, and it does appear the song was written by frontman Ben Gibbard as something of an homage to 'Interiors' - the article mentions his fascination with the film. Here's the link: www.knotmag.com/?ar ticle=1027

I've never quite understood my own fascination with 'Interiors,' but it remains one of my favorite films. I read in Eric Lax's biography that Allen most closely identifies with Eve more than any other character he's created. I have a soft spot for all of his dramatic works, though. You may also like 'Another Woman.'

I agree with you about his dramatic works..."Another Woman" is just as fascinating...Gena Rowlands is
very compelling.

Yeah, it's apparently Ben Gibbard's favorite movie, and he wrote the song about it.

I've never actually seen the movie though; but I'm a big fan of Death Cab for Cutie so I'll look into it.

It is interesting. See also "As Time Goes By", the Casablanca song, which supposedly contains the core idea of the movie and it inspired the writers in writing the script.

The only thing that pisses me off is I knew how the movie would end...oh well, good song. Go Ben.

I found out about this film after hearing about it on Drive Well, Sleep Carefully. Brilliant song, brilliant film, brilliant band. Ben is my hero.

It's okay. Dick Cheney is my uncle.

I just watch the movie today, and I had no idea that song was based on the film; that is pretty cool.

reply

OMG. Yes. I had forgotten that this song was about this movie. Thank you so much for reminding me. Amazing.
