It's absolutely brutal. I can't think of another movie that was so emotionally devastating as this one.

Oh wow, I just watched "In a Year with 13 Moons" for the second time, and I came on here to post the EXACT same question that you did. As in, like, "Is this the heaviest film ever?" Cool!

There are a lot of heavy films out there for sure. Two that immediately come to mind are "Cries and Whispers" and "The Deer Hunter". I just don't know. Though I would definitely say that the main character in this movie is without a doubt the most PATHETIC character I've ever seen in a movie and am likely ever to see. Elvira makes Carrie White look like the high school cheerleader at the top of the pyramid. Lol

But there's something about these ultra heavy movies that sucks me right in. I just love them.

Neil Jordan was talking about this movie in the DVD commentary of 'The Crying Game'. He said it was a sad and brutal story about a burly man that tells this dude he could like him if he cut off his balls and had a sex-change, so the guy does it, then the burly man says, "Goodbye, I never liked you anyway" and leaves mr./mrs. Good Lordy!!
