A top notch guilty pleasure(spoilers)

I've seen this several times over nearly 20 years and always liked it. I am now a middle-aged father of a sports-minded daughter and I really identify with Lexis' father. Despite the sentimental musical theme, the movie's events and plot are realistic. Great movies are made up of many fine small moments and fine performances that work together. There are many in this film. The look of joy and innocence on Lexi's face when she skates, the scared look of the French skater and coach as she watches Lexi, the people at the Broadmoor sponsor's party stopping to watch her skate in her party clothes on the outdoor arena at night, the fine performance of Colleen Dewhurst who plays the role of the older and wise past champion skater who understands Lexi best, the reluctant loving father, the talented but confused boyfriend who can't decide on a career or on Lexi, the entire musical score, Lexi cowering in the attic in fear of failure, the camera that moves along with Lexi to pass on the perception of the tremendous speed at which these skaters perform, the matter of fact way the radiology doctor explains the injury to the emotional father, the way the world looks to someone with low vision, the look on the face of the audience in the final skating sequence when they find out the truth. In many sports films the longshot hero wins the key match in the end for a happy ending. In this film Lexi and her close ones succeed in their own way. I realize that the director, Wyre, is more known for making TV movies than high quality feature films and Lynn-Holly Johnson did not become famous for acting. IMHO this film was underrated like the skating judges in the movie underrate one of Lexi’s skating performances simply because they can’t believe some unknown could do that well. It happens. 10 triples out of 10.

"Rocky for Girls" is a good description of it, though I'm a guy and I like it as much as "Rocky" – if not more.

"Rocky for girls", I like that.

Thanks very much!

Loved this movie as a kid and loved Lynn Holly Johnson, who at the time became popular enough to appear in a James Bond movie ("For Your Eyes Only") as, duh, a skater.

Typecasting, to be sure, but, in the words of another Bond film, nobody does it better.
