Liv and Ingrid in an acting tour de force

I just finished watching this film and I am just completely blown away by the acting and writing in this movie. I have seen Ingrid Bergman in many films and I've never seen her like this. She was incredible. Liv was just astounding. The entire film struck a very deep chord with me. Wow.

I've seen a few of Ingmar Bergman's films and this is my favorite. I can see traces of this film in some of Woody Allen's work, too, albeit in a much lighter way.

My feelings exactly coubo. I just finished watching it and I'm just stunned. I wept like a baby when Liv confronted Ingrid. It was so beautiful and so real. The scenes of Liv as a little girl that accompanied Liv's diatribe was haunting.

I am delighted by your reply. It's always fun to find out that others were moved in similar ways. Have you seen The Virgin Spring? It's also extraordinary. I am getting ready to watch Persona tonight. I can't wait. If I keep discovering these gems by Bergman I'm going to have to move him onto my top 5 favorite directors list!

I haven't seen many of her films, only half-a-dozen, her most famous, I think, in which she usually played more sympathetic roles, therefore this time I got really impressed by her performance in this movie. It was truly powerful, emotional and envolving, and I think I like her much more now.

Jpgr1 - This is years later, but I had to respond. Autumn Sonata was a revelation to me. The acting was indeed superb. If you haven't already, you might want to take a look at Wild Strawberries, another of director Bergman's outstanding works.

I thought it was very well acted but at the same time I didn't particularly enjoy it. I think it's fair to say women will get more out of this film than most men. The way they kept opening old wounds and making them fresh again. It was fascinating and horrifying. There were a few scenes Eva had the look of someone about to commit matricide. Well made film I doubt I would watch again. By the end, I wondered if the Helena character was even necessary. I also had the strangest feeling that the letter at the end was more for Viktor to read instead of Charlotte. Basically, a bunch of very unhappy and dysfunctional people. If you are into that, this film is for you.
