I like this film untill he punched him in the end.

he was apologising and didn't deserve that. I just thought he didn't deserve that

Hooper must have been very confident he was not going to get sued or charged for belting the director.

Back in those days, people didn't go around calling the cops every time they felt insecure...no safe spaces either!

If you go back and watch it again pay attention to the tone of voice and way that the director was apologizing. He was being pretty smarmy and smug about the whole thing. Saying while it was hard on the drivers (Reynolds and Vincent) thanks to his creativity and insistence, they now had something they could be proud of. So his apology was more like "now do you see how great I really am"? Which is why Reynolds breaks the fourth wall and asks the audience with his eyes and smirk "should I take this crap or knock his block off"?

I'd resent that if I were sober.

And then Reynolds did it for real to his director while filming Heat.

I agree, he did come across "too big for his britches". (Sally should have put her knee in "that certain spot that's special" too!

The "director" was a douche bag and he put the lives of everyone at stake for a BS film and he even gave the cliche' "YOU'LL NEVER WORK IN THIS TOWN AGAIN" line to Hooper and Ski only moments before.

The punch does not ruin the movie.

Where do you gutless apologetic whiney people come from? ..oh oh he hit him...oh my goodness...

I saw this movie first run at the theater and was shocked by the punch and confused by it. What I have learned over the years is that the director was based on Peter Bogdanovich that Burt had worked with on Nickelodeon just a couple years before. Burt's close friend, James Best, had also worked with Bogdanovich on Nickelodeon and helped writing the script to Hooper. It's clear they both hated Bogdanovich after working with him on Nickelodeon. Burt's star power was at it's height after Smokey and the Bandit. So I think this was a way to retaliate at Bogdanovich.
