was this film suppressed?

i've been waiting since 1978 to see this film. i guess it was shown at least once in 2005 on turner classic movies, but otherwise it's been unavailable. is it possible that the "tastemakers" (whomever they may be, or may have been back in 1978) suppressed this film because its subject matter (the story of a thirteen year old boy who is addicted to heroine) was a bit too "hot"? (Perhaps somebody like Bill Cosby was offended, and threw his weight around in order to make sure that few people would see this picture.)

It's available on Netflix.

I don't think it was suppressed, but to really understand the fate of this movies and others like it, you should read Blackface by Nelson George:

Movies like this, for all their good intentions, get tossed to the side and aren't well promoted. But read the book!
