They really needed to stop after part 4; perhaps even after the second one.
But then, of course, we wouldn't have had Season of the Witch which was one of the better sequels.

shareHow about stopping after the first one? That's my vote.
shareYep. Though I actually liked Carpenter's idea, which he tried to fulfill with Hallowee III, to make Halloween an anthology series of films -- kind of a cinematic version of Twilight Zone, but explicitly horror-oriented. Each story would have been completely independent. But the first movie was so good, the studio demanded a direct sequel, so that when III came out, following Carpenter's concept, audiences (myself included at the time) were like, WTF, this isn't Halloween; there's no Michael Myers, and the whole thing fell flat. Too bad, as I think the anthology series of films would have been a really great idea
shareI preferred Halloween III to Halloween II by a long shot.
shareIn all honesty, everything after Curse of Michael Myers (Producer’s Cut) is worthless. H20/Resurrection didn’t amount to anything other than being Scream ripoffs that just so happen to feature Myers and Jamie Lee Curtis. Rob Zombie’s films are good as their own thing but not as Halloween films. Halloween 2018 was a major disappointment for not living up to its promise of being so good that they had to ignore all the sequels.
shareI think 4 is decent, 2, Season of the Witch, H20, and 2018 are solid, so I'm fine with some of the ones after the original.
shareI pretty much ignore all the sequels, save for the mediocre sequel from 1981, and even that's a stretch for me to ever watch.
shareIn my opinion the best of the Halloween sequels was part III, Season of the Witch, in part because it didn't involve Michael Myers. That aside, I think part III was creepy in its own right and a rather decent idea at root level. It was kind of clunky due to Tommy Wallace's amateurish direction, but it was a good horror film with numerous memorable scenes (the ending in particular).
