Why did Michael pick these people as his targets?

He thought she was absolutely beautiful and wanted to be friends with her. That's why he waited patiently for her at the Wallace house. Perhaps he wanted to throw a big Halloween party! Michael was all nervous in the corner waiting for his sister to see what he did for her. And what does Laurie do? She cries and whimpers. He tried to reach out and hug her but he forgot the knife was still in his hand. He then calmly went after her to apologize but she pokes him in the neck with a needle and stabs him. He even tried to help her hang up clothes in the closet only to get poked with a hanger.
Michael wanted to be friends with ANnie but didn't know exactly how to approach her...hence the stalking. He was even willing to help her with her laundry. But Annie just goes on and on about Paul! Michael decides to give her one more chance and waits patiently for her in the back seat of the car. And what does Annie do? She starts rubbing the winshield! WTF
Michael was only asking Lynda if she preferred him with or without the sheet and she just teases him with her mosquito bite boobs!
Bob was very selfish not offering poor Mike a beer. A night of planning a big halloween fun house can make one very thirsty. And he didn't even offer him one!

I always found him more of a trickster. I mean yeah, he's gonna kill ya. But I don't think it was hate-driven. He got more sinister in the sequels, as in having much more aggression and an actual motive. 1978 Michael is more like a deadly adult-sized child playing pranks that just happen to be fatal.

Michael is insane.

Because Laurie had the nerve to go up to the Myer's house and place a key under the mat.

Yeah, it would seem so. Otherwise it's a needless tie-in scene. The father is the realtor trying to unload the place (which is bizarre why no one ever demolished it over the years within its otherwise standard neighbourhood), so maybe Michael wants to target ppl infiltrating his token space.

Keep in mind, nowhere in the film proper is it explained that Laurie & he are siblings. We're not to take that reach until sequels.
Michael also does not simply stalk & only kill Laurie. He kills the 2 other girls who taunted him on their way home from school, prior.

I wonder what would've happened if the father dropped off the key?

Laurie: Invaded his space (his house)
Annie: Her "speed kills" comment.
Lynda: Totally!
Bob: He didn't offer Michael a beer.

reply

LOL well yeah the constant "totally" was too much for even Michael to handle!

Michael was crazy, that's all. First he kills his older sister Judith at 6. Then he escapes to basically kill another sister (Laurie). He kills anyone who gets in his way, like Annie, Bob, the dog, etc. Notice he does not kill Tommy who almost runs into him in the afternoon. Guess he figured Tommy should be spared.

Laurie wasn't his sister until 1981. In 1978, the VHS box said it best...Michael returned home to relive the murder of his sister over and over and over again...the 3 people he killed. Laurie looked like Judith, so did Lynda, for that matter. Even Akkad himself said the premise was simple. Babysitters to be killed by the Boogeyman. Michael doesn't kill children because they are young, defenseless and maybe Tommy even reminds him of himself at that age. Hollywood sensibility : killing teens is okay, but children dying is taboo and he already did it once in Assault on Precinct 13. Child killing does not go over well with audiences.

So there's the reason behind all of that.
