Michael/the shape

I've been watching these movies for as long as I can remember, but I'm not sure I know the difference between Michael Myers and 'the shape.' What is the shape? Why did two different people play Michael/the shape? Who played him through the majority of the movie? Can someone please explain all this to me?

reply

Michael is The Shape, The Shape is Michael. The actor credited as Michael is the one whose face is shown when Laurie takes off the mask. It sounds a lot better than crediting them "Michael in Mask" "Michael without Mask" since the actors were different.

Thanks! I guess that all makes sense. I always knew he was referred to as The Shape quite often, just never understood why.

reply

Basically it's a credits thing. The Shape was the guy behind the mask (90% of the time) Nick Castle. Michael Myers unmasked as an adult was Tony Moran. Separate credit, a little confusion.

Well, Nick Castle didn't play him the Shape in the whole movie. Tommy Lee Wallace played him in the closet scene. Debra Hill, standing across the street, etc.

I don't read Wikipedia for that stuff. That's common knowledge.

I'm sure the average fan who doesn't research the movie as much as we do wouldn't know that.

Don't call it a comeback. I've been here for years.

That's true. I think he was insinuating I had to look that up on Wikipedia, though. Which certainly isn't the case.

Michael Myers represents an incarnation of pure evil, the evil just represents itself in the "shape" of Michael Myers. This is why he never really dies, he's kind of like Satan's version of Jesus, he just keeps rising again.

At least until he meets his end against Jason Voorhees....

I take "The Shape" to mean that he has a human form/shape, but that he's not technically human any longer. He's a blank, nothing; he seems to occupy negative space.
