Has anyone read the theory that they drowned at the beginning when they were swimming and the whole movie was a dream as they flew to the afterlife in the car at the end?

As the theory goes, Danny didn't save Sandy from drowning. She actually drowned and the whole movie was a dream. That's why they go flying off at the end.

Another theory is that Danny was the one who drowned while trying to save her and the whole movie was him imagining what his life would have been like with her had he survived.

Oh my God, these "theories" get more bizarre every year.

Sandy didn't almost drown.. Nobody drowned.

Danny's version of his time at the beach with Sandy was a steaming metric crock of bullshit he cooked up to impress his equally horny buddies.

Unfortunately for Danny, Sandy's goody-goody version was accurate.

That's because the cigarette Sandy was smoking in the leather getup wasn't tobaccy. It was reefer madness that made them think they were driving in the clouds.

What actually happened is that they left the fair stoned to the bejesus and drove into a lake and drowned, but the drowning came at the END of the film, not the beginning, so the whole story wasn't a dream.

This is fun.

I know you're being facetious here and it's amusing. However, there's nothing in the movie that would indicate they drove into a lake after leaving the fair.

See, here's the great thing about theories like this: they have just enough to sustain them if you're one to be susceptible to believing. The lyrics "I saved her life. She nearly drowned" although you may believe were a crock of bullshit were actually in the movie and can thus be used to support the theory.

No such thing exists for your alternate.

The line "I saved her life, she nearly drowned" was just one part of the bullshit story that the "tough" guy Danny grossly exaggerate about his time at the beach with Sandy. Not only did he say he had sex with the goody-goody virginal Sandy but that she was also skilled at it.

Sandy's version was what actually happened which was what the "he said - she said" song was about.

Scary that anyone would totally miss the point of the song.

No such thing exists for your alternate.

Sure there is: Sandy was smoking *something*. How do we know it wasn't reefer? My idiotic theory is no more or less idiotic than any other theory, for what that's worth..

i do like the dark spin of your OP.
it would totally go against the glam way the film was filmed.. knowing that either Danny or most of the cast are in a limbo state etc.

I really don't want to start a fight and I know that some people theorize too much about Kubrick's movies. However, as I studied during my Film studies in college, Kubrick was indeed a perfectionist who not only thought about every single details (of course he made mistakes, I don't argue with that), but he also wanted to make sure that each of his movies left room for personal interpretations and forced people to think about them and analyze them after seeing them. He didn't want to say and show everything in an obvious way.

So, despite the fact that I don't over-analyze The Shining, I would still say that The Shining theories make much more sense than this Greese far-fetched theory.

I think one reason is that, so few great movies are ever made that, people focus and even obsess over those few great movies. It's kind of fun, and even funny. But, man that Room 237 thing, WOW!, that was brain-meltingly goofy!

Or they both were burned alive in the pep rally bonfire and the whole movie was Frenchy’s dream when she passed out after breathing in fumes from a bad mix of hair coloring chemicals in beauty school.

Yeah I was going to add a whole backstory about Rydell High being a football cult where every fall they had to find a sacrificial virgin (Sandy) to place on the pep rally bonfire to offer up to the the football god Rydell for a winning season. How Danny was sent out as a scout to find one in the summer but ended up falling for Sandy and drove the Grease Lightening car into the fire to try to save her.

I hope not, because I hate these "twists" when everything you've seen is actually a dream. I find it lazy and it kinda kills the whole purpose of the story for me (with the exception of David Lynch's movies lol).

I can added to this fun theory Sandy line "it turned colder that's where it ends" to implies that she died at sea. Also the fact that Sandy didn't fly to Australia looks a bit odd and unexpected.
