Back when I was a kid I always thought the T Birds were cool and popular

I think Danny and Kenickie were probably cool and well liked(even though Kenickie was a bit of a jerk) and they didn't really go along with the childish antics like the other guys did. But, yeah, unless they all grew up together I can't believe Sonny, Doodie and Putzy were the coolest guys they could get to be T Birds.

I also always thought they were the cool gang and I found it interesting that guys in sports were considered losers (at least in the way they were presented in the movie) - these days, the sport guys are the jocks, the coolest people in school and the T-Birds would be considered a gang of weirdos.

However, both groups would still mess up with Eugene. It's an alpha male thing.

They were never supposed to be the popular kids they were just supposed to be the 'cool rebels' which Danny and Kenickie were. The other three being in the gang made sense because if you look at any 'cool' groups of guys you will see that most of them are not genuinely 'cool' and seem out of place. Guys like that are usually only in the group because they probably grew up with the others or knew them well somehow and just ended up as part of the gang. Kind of like how Jan was a Pink Lady, she didn't completwly fit the image or way they acted but she was probably childhood friends with one or two of the girls and therefore was just kind of in the group by default.

I think Sonny, Doody, and Putzie were only in the group because they grew up with Danny and Kenickie.

They only thought they were cool and popular.

Danny and Kenickie were too cool to bother Eugene. The other three, though…

They weren’t meant to be popular. They are outliers who most likely aren’t good at a whole lot at all.
