Film should have been much better!

I Have seen many naval films and have liked most of them but this makes the bottom of the list. Even below "the final countdown". From "run silent, run deep" to "the last detail" and "crimson tide". I have loved most of them, especially Das Boot. But this film seemed to have problems all over the place. The leads were good, the sub was real, and the story had great potential. But most of it was a disappointment.
Why on earth would a Russian skipper drive in heavy fog without radar? And what ship doesn't have an Eloctronics Technician onboard? Why wouldn't military action be taken immediately afterwards? I mean this is during the cold war. I also noticed just how bad the acting felt. The terminology was really sub par. You might have to serve in the Navy to notice so maybe my opinions biased a bit. But it was really a bit amateurish. Most films do well with it but this wasn't one of them. The skipper never even tells his crew to brace for impact or muster for a headcount!
I hear they cut out a chunk of the Russian footage and that's too bad because I think it would have helped a bit. Now don't get me wrong, the film was interesting. Sure the special effects are hard to watch now but the last 30 minutes of this film are terrific. The characters start to shine and things start to happen. The tension builds and drama unfolds and bam it's over. As soon as it ends you're left hoping there'd be a little more closure but there's not. Yeah this is kind of a rant but in the end it's an interesting watch. Check it out but don't expect anything spectacular.

It wasnt a Russian Naval ship that struck them, it was a Norweigen Freighter bound for NY and running behind schedule. He made quite a few bad decisions prior to the collusion with the sub.

Thanks for clearing that up. I obviously need to pay closer attention to details.
