I saw this movie in the theater when it came out and several times on tv since then, i recently bought the DVD so i noticed something that a wasnt aware of - Near the end of the movie when Julia is in the wagon with the other couple that have the 2 bottles of oil - His name is Mr Standard - as in Standard Oil.

No one named Standard was involved in the founding of Standard Oil. The most famous member of that partnership was Rockefeller.

I don't think they were trying to be historically accurate - they were just making a joke which I missed the first few times I watched it.
