MACV or Special Forces unit depicted in story?...

Is it specified if the unit that Burt Lancaster is in charge of is a MACV or a Special Forces unit or merely an unnamed advisory US Army unit? Is a province in South Vietnam cited in the story or just some made up Viet name for the location?

Penang is in Malaysia. You may be thinking of Danang in central VN. MAAG was before MACV. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam was formed in '63 or '64.
