Scanners or The Fury?

Scanners or The Fury? The Fury or Scanners? They both probably take place in the same universe, but for me its Scanners.

Exploding heads are scarier than exploding people and Scanners has Patrick MacGoohan. Who is scary in himself.

Who cares when you can watch them both?

I actually borrowed a VHS of Scanners this weekend, and saw The Fury on Fox Movie Channel. Two really great, and similar, movies, although they both have their faults. Scanners is more suspenseful and subtle, yet the acting is wooden at times. The Fury is bold and exciting, has great style, yet is sometimes too much, like most de Palma. <SPOILERS>Both have great special effects. My jaw dropped when I saw John Cassavetes explode!!!

There was a stunned silence. I think they were impressed. At the time it was one of the bloodiest movies out there.

The Devil's Rejects makes De Palma look like a evangelical moralist. ;)

^^^lol, I haven't seen The Devil's Rejects. I'll check it out.

I too saw The Fury when it first came out in the theaters...it blew me away...and then it never blew me away again until I saw it on DVD. I really believe it is DePalma's tour-de-force...his North By Northwest (Dressed to Kill is his "Psycho")... maybe his best film. I really like Scanners but it is a disservice to compare it with The Fury.

DePalma and Cronenberg, for different reasons, are two of my favorite filmmakers on the planet, making this a tough choice. I'm gonna vote for The Fury over Scanners, though, because dynamic action is one of DePalma's strengths, but one of Cronenberg's weaknesses. He's too clinical and Kubrickian for action films, if you ask me.

You nailed it. Let's not forget that The Fury came first. Cronenberg owes much more to DePalma than I've ever heard him acknowledge.

Then you haven't seen Carrie or Scarface-those are undeniably his best films!!

Scanners had one thing up on the Fury Micheal Ironside as a bad guy he's the best. He has ice in his veins and you truly believe that he would blow your head up if you go in his way. I love when Gillian escapes with the aid of Hester and it is slow motion and you watch as Peter sees her die. I love them both and could not pick one. Why not both?

Scanners, for sure. The power of explodo was more fun in that. Kirk Douglas and John Cassavetes are cool but Patrick MacGoohan and Michael Ironside are better.

I love The Fury though.

'The Fury' for 3 reasons: Kirk Douglas, Brian De Palma, and John Williams.

SCANNERS all the way. THE FURY had moments but was mostly Cheeze, the opening was horrible, Kirk Douglas rolling around in his bathing suit wrestling with his son and then moments later engaging in one of the corniest gun battles ever. Also the acting in Scanners was more real and gritty, The FURY played like a lame Hollywood movie trying to have edge.
