Pronunciation of 'Gillian'

In the states is this name always said the way it is in the film? as in Gil-ian and not Jillian

reply

No, it would be Jillian but I am not sure if they knew that at the time or what the deal was. I thought John Farris was dead when this came out but I don't know for sure. I have the audiobook and it is more like Jillian.

reply

John Farris is still alive for your information. He will be 80 next year.

No it's pronounced GILL-EE-AN. With a hard G like in girl. John Farris wrote the screenplay too so if they were pronouncing it incorrectly I'm certain that he would've let them know. Jillian is the name of Melinda Dillon's character in CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND.

reply

I've never heard it pronounced with a hard G anywhere else except this movie. It sounded like they kept saying Gilligan the whole movie.

reply

I'm American, and this movie is the only place I've ever heard that name pronounced that way. It drove me nuts.

"If you want to take over the world, we don't teach that, but give it a go."

reply

As a non-american when I see the name Gillian. I pronounce it internally as Gil-lian. Not sure I know of anyone IRL by that name so perhaps it's my ignorance.

Thus I didn't find the pronounciation in this film to be strange.

reply

I looked it up and according to my thorough Google research it can go either way.

Some are Gillian with a hard G, some with a soft G.
