You're absolutely right. Weathers comes across as an insatiable pain-in-the-ass and I could never understand why they even bothered to cast him in a movie of this nature. If you think about it, the film would still hold the same water without his character. Aside from a racially-inclined entanglement due to the ignorance-wielding mind of the Chetnik leader, excellently played by Richard Kiel, there's not much else to say. The guy was basically "in the way". This naturally does not in any way imply that Carl Weathers was a bad actor; on the contrary, he's an outstanding performer, starring in numerous films such as the well renowned "Rocky/Rocky II" to obscure films like the cult classic horror/fantasy film "The Bermuda Depths". In this particular film, however, I must say he was terribly miscast, and one could already tell that his character was " a fifth wheel".

yes weathers has a commanding preasance. maby they wher trying to be somewhat politicaly correct to cast him "OR" they wanted to put a member of several blockbuster films of the time in force 10 "Ford" Star wars. "Shaw" jaws, and "weathers" Rocky.

I'm inclined to agree that Carl Weathers was miscast in a comic relief role that felt like it was written more with an Eddie Murphy/Richard Pryor type in mind.

I don't like these hideous accusations against the great Weathers.

reply

No one accused Carl of anything! Copy and post them...

It's Apollo Creed for heaven's sake! No one's gonna mess with him!

reply

No kidding, Weathers is probably the greatest actor, ever to walk on the face of the Earth. Apparently these people did not see "Bucktown" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072747/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 where Weathers totally mastered the roll of "Hambone" and really got down and funky bringing justice to where justice had not ever been before. I never did understand why there wasn't at least one sequel to Bucktown, if not an entire series? If they would have made it into a television series, right now it would have the record for the longest running series and there would be millions of kids named Hambone. Hambone has a certain ring to it that I think only Weathers could pull off and he really, really did, pull it off masterfully as I mentioned!

reply

I loved his character the movie wouldn't be the same without him

reply

Yeah, they might have got things done faster.

Funniest part is when he held up everyone's escape because it's about time he got respect. With the enemies already in view coming at them!

reply

I don't think he was miscast at all. He was comic relief, and did a great job of it too.

The Gunslinger smiled. "On the way to the Dark Tower," he said, "anything is possible."

Who would have killed Jaws if he hadn't been in the film?

Conquer your fear, and I promise you, you will conquer death.
