Could there have been a better ending? (spoilers)

I just got a chance to see this little masterpiece again after downloading a good dubbed version online. I am still put off by the ending. The ending should have been: Lizard and Hybrid kill the Judge, and then use the money to find some pretty girls. Cause, lets face it, although it is the best Kung-Fu film ever made, there is not one girl in the whole movie.

According to the Trivia section on IMDB, apparently the Snake was originally going to be female. I think that would have been a great addition.

LMFAO!

The Venom movies are all a bit gay apart from Invincible Shaolin in which they do have girlfriends.

Nonsense. ;-]
Snake is okay the way he is...;-)

Anyway...
I actually like all that male bonding stuff in CC's movies...
When I saw a few Venom movies, I thought they were homosocial to the point of being slightly gay (not that I mind). Watching some David Chiang /Ti Lung stuff made me reconsider, though... No scene in Venom movies that I can think of can possibly outgay New One Armed Swordsman...;-)

By the way - the judge getting away with what he did is one of the best things about the ending... Makes a lot of sense and adds a little frustration to the mayhem...:-) The ending is great...

I never implied the movie was gay because there were no women, MaedhRos, I just thought it would make for a better movie.

Now that I think of it, it looks like the ending was intended to leave room for a sequel. However I would still liked to have seen the Judge thrown into the Iron Maiden or the Iron Coat.

That's what I'm not so certain about... What would a presence of a female really add to the story? Right now, there are two things that I can think of: something for the guys to drool over - and being a girl myself, I prefer the characters (Snake in particular, attractively effeminate as he is) the way they are... And, second possibility - romance. I think I've read that Centipede&Snake being a husband and a wife was the original intention. That may have added some interesting extra tensions - and in my opinion it would be the only way to introduce a well-working romance element into the story without changing it too much... However, the way it's dealt with in the movie has other benefits (besides more material for girls to drool over, there are definitely some very interesting homosocial tensions that make it up for the lost heterosocial content, IMHO). It all boils down to who prefers what... It wouldn't be a better movie. Just a slightly different one. It's just my opinion, of course... :-)

And even though I understand your frustration with the judge not ending up in an iron maiden or iron coat, I still think that a more traditional ending with the judge getting what he deserved would be not as good, story-wise. The only thing I regret is that Chang Cheh didn't make a better point of it... Like - a shot of Wang Lung Wei appointing a new chief officer or something... Anything. Rather showing that some people get away with anything than letting Kuo Chui just say it...:-) But that's only a minor thing. I am more than satisfied with "The Five Venoms" as Ni Kuang, Chang Cheh and others made it.

Regarding that "gay" thing, I think that was a reaction rather to pedicab driver's post than yours.

The dub actually has Lizard explain why they don't go after the judge: "All judges are the same. If we kill him the next one may be worse." I personally didn't mind the ending as it effectively stated that the problem wasn't so much the judge as the system he served especially as lizard worked for the legal system so he knew how it really operated.

On a side note we now know that the Iron Maiden and its history was actually created in 1793 by Johann Philipp Siebenkees. This has been verified because in all the accounts of Medieval torture methods not one regarding an Iron Maiden before 1793 has been found. I should mention the 19th century was not a good one for China: the Opium Wars, Taiping Civil War, Punti-Hakka Clan Wars, Nien Rebellion, Muslim Rebellion, Panthay Rebellion and Miao Rebellion all turned the country into one big battlefield.

Are you guys serious? some one says this movie was gay? who the hell needs girls in a kung fu movie? this is a masterpeace and not homo anything.

Wrong. They are clearly homo sapiens.

Loved the ending, by the way, because for all their heroics, the two good guys didn't wind up killing the bad guys. The bad guys all killed each other.

But if ye do doubt your courage, go no further, for Death awaits you with nasty pointy teeth!
