The Metoriite ?

I foregot how big was it suppsed be and what would happen to Phoenix Arizona The United States and the whole world if one the EXCATE same sized REALLY did detinate over Phoenix ?

reply

It was supposed to be a comet that strikes Phoenix. But since most comets are usually miles in size, the whole state of Arizona would have been destroyed - not to mention the terrible effect it would have on the planet as a whole. They say anything bigger than 6 miles wide hitting the Earth would be an Extinction Level Event, something that prolly killed the dinosaurs all those millions of years ago.

I forget what size it was supposed to be but I do remember Crenna/Voight saying that it was going to level everything within a 100 mile radius around impact with Phoenix being about 50 from ground zero, so relatively speaking that would be a small event by comet collision scales.

To give some perspective back around 1900 a comet exploded over Siberia and leveled about 200 square miles of forest (unpopulated fortunately), so that would have been about double the size of the film's comet and in real life that had pretty much no effect on the world enviroment, though you would have been totally screwed if you were within range.

In other words it's totally believable to think that being hit by a comet big to destroy a major city but not cause massive extinctions is possible, in fact they say such collisions happen every 200 years or so.

I'll have it on DVD in a few days, I'll post about it when I see the movie again.
