I have the LP

I bought it from this old record store just caused I liked all the songs on there, is the movie any good? I am interested to see if it like The Big Chill or Forrest Gump where the Soundtrack (almost) over shadows the film

I have the LP also and the movie on VHS. I think the music is incorporated well into the plot -- "FM" is about a radio station, after all. Normally when a movie has a good soundtrack, the music overpowers the film, like in the two examples you listed. But in "FM," they work perfectly together. Plus the movie has live segments with Jimmy Buffett and Linda Ronstadt. It's kind of a corny plot -- an independent radio station battling the corporate goliath -- but it seemed more genuine in 1978. I gave it 8 out of 10 stars.

The movie got a bad rap when it was released in the spring of 1978. It played here in New York City for just one week. But, I saw it on a double bill with The Wiz, and I liked FM much better. I also have the two-disc soundtrack on LP.

BRING OUT SEASON THREE OF "ONCE AND AGAIN" ON DVD!

I bought the LP in the Mall, right after seeing the movie.
I had never done that before or since!
I do remember though, one song, I can't remember which one, was defective, the pressing, and I had to drive all the way back to the mall and get them to replace it, I was young then and didn't even know if they would, they even let me listen to the next album in the store to make sure they were all not bad pressings.
The Record Bar.
I still have this album, but the only side I usually play is Life's been good, Joe Walsh.
I also liked FM by Steely Dan, but play it on their best of album (Trivia, that was never on one of their "concept LP's)

Yeah, it's a great movie. It's the movie that inspired me as a teenager to get into radio. I can't tell you how many DJs I've talked to who said they got into radio because of that movie.

Okay the movie is nothing to write home about but the soundtrack is just great. I saw the movie ona double bill with Seargant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band in 1979. Guess which film of the two is the most forgettable? I mean Peter Frampton as an actor? C'mon! I liked FM anyway. I loved the music.

I got the LP soon after the movie's theatrical release. The 'mirror-like- feature on the front of the album cover was a nice touch for its packaging.

I was somewhat disappointed though, to find that not all the songs in the movie were in that album. I seem to recall they were 'Baby Come Back' by Player and Fleetwood Mac-'Don't Stop' and I think there was one more song that didn't make it to the album. Heck, it was a two-record set, you't think that there'd be room for all the movie's songs to be included-go figure.

But like many other folks, FM has been one of the key elements which inspired me to pursue and become successful in the field of Broadcasting, primairily as an engineer and producer, which I am to this day. The other key elements of inspiration for me were visits to great and powerful local radio stations in my area, where I got opportunity to chat with lots of cool people in the biz, back when radio was so much fun behind the microphone as well as on the listening side, and in an era when folks around and in a radio station were so much more casual and laid-back.

I, too, bought the soundtrack back when it came out. I had already had Steely Dan's "Aja", but "FM (No Static At All)" cemented me as a SD fan. Also liked a few of the other songs on the album (the first time I had ever heard Tom Petty). I have one problem now: lost my copy that was on vinyl. I wouldn't mind having this on CD, but does anyone know if it's online anywhere? I particularly want "FM-Reprise", which is a shorter version of the theme song, just instrumental with a truly awesome sax solo by Wayne Shorter.

Oh yea, and don't forget about the poster...QSKY and a paper airplane. Not to mention the strange edited down version of Night Moves with the bridge missing.

I still have it on 8-track. KACUNK!

I had that poster on my wall until it disintegrated!

I found a nice copy of the double LP @ the Goodwill, yesterday (the poster was still folded inside!). Still have a copy of the film on Laserdisc, but my player gave up the ghost some time ago.

reply

Aye- laser disc. lol I'm sure then you remember the first pressings of FM on laser that was in the MCA Disco-Vision line of new laserdiscs?

reply

My LD copy is the Letterbox reissue. But do remember the DiscoVision titles (I even have some).
