'Prisoner'

I like this movie just fine, but I have got to say that this is the worst theme song in the whole history of the genre. Man, I hate this song. Can I get a witness from the congregation?

Death is...whimsical today.

reply

I wasn't thrilled with the theme song either. That being said, I hardly noticed or remembered it after seeing the film many times. What always comes back is Let's All Chant and Burn.

reply

Watched the movie last nite after not seeing it for a long time and that "Prisoner' song was annoying. LOL, Let's all Chant is the one I remember as well.

Actually as far as a song goes I thought it was pretty good, however I think it is an absolutely terrible fit for this film. I'm not at all sure what they were thinking, maybe they thought anything with Streisand would help the film.

reply

Jon Peters was actually effing Streisand at the time, and I would guesstimate that's how the song ended up in the movie. But i have to say, I LOVE THIS FREAKING SONG! But, as nobguynes pointed out, it was not a good fit for this movie. Absolutely out of place.

reply

"Jon Peters was actually effing Streisand.." Nice terminology, deedsharpe. Actually, Streisand and Peters were lovers for a decade, it was a bit more than effing. Bet the ladies love your smooth talk...

This is a great song. I think it is one of the "roughest" songs that Barbra ever did. Even tougher than the music for "A Star Is Born". I think the producers of the film were trying to make the song edgy to compliment the film but it didn't work. The film is a stand alone and the song is a stand alone but together they do not work.

reply

It's my absolute "go to" Streisand song. I love it.

reply

Though I too would question the song's appropriateness to the film, to be honest, the song is the best thing about this movie. Streisand sang the song because her then boyfriend Jon Peters produced the film.

reply

Well that's pop culture for ya. I for one LOVE the song and think it was very appropriate. I also think Faye was at the top of her game when she did the film.

Young man is angry! Girl is afraid! He wants to get high, she wants to get paid! City's Burning!

reply

Am I the only one who loves this song and thinks it is great in the movie? lol

reply

no, you're not. i love it, too :) it is out of place but somehow it just works.

I saw thiss movie when I was about 11. I absolutely loved the movie and the soundtrack. I actually bought the soundtrackon vinyl. I now have prisoner on my ipod. The movie is in rotation on Showtime right now.

I thought it was a great song and it made the hair stand up on my neck it had such emotional range. I didn't know Barbara could belt out a tune like that.

Not at all. I echo your sentiments. The *Eyes* of Laura Mars... hence, "I'm like a Prisoner... captured by your *eyes*! Fits like a glove.

In fact, I love the song so much, just ordered the CD from Amazon! :-)

reply

Love the song!..Anyone has more info on the cryptic (spiritual/religious almost) lyrics?

reply

you are absolutely right-- the film is far from perfect but I love the content, the song and everything about them.

reply

Yes. I, too, liked the song. And felt it a good fit for this odd, flawed, yet compelling little flick.

Huh, go figure. I just saw this movie for the very first time the other night and was actually impressed by the Streisand theme and how it fit the overall feel of the movie and the time period in which it was made. My only real remembrance of this film was via a Laura Mars pictorial in Playboy at the time (I think I still have the issue), featuring shots of some of the same naked models that were seen in the film. As for the movie, it comes across as a little dated now and I didn't really care for the ending, but it was still worth watching for Faye's performance and the use of some non-typical NYC sets.
