Met the Director - Mr. Barot, Details inside

Hello guys,

Chandra barot was the chief guest in my college's film festival and I went to pick him up from his home in Breach candy, and It was a 2hours to and fro ride,
so picked his brains on the old film, why the climax was so bad, and why after this brilliant film he didnt make any others,

also his thoughts on the 2006 film (which he hated)

it was a interesting conversation since I too make short films and want to become a film maker and Don 1978 is one of my favorite films of that era

Well? Why don't you tell us what he said?

Climax? Remake? etc

reply

I didnt have my notifications on till 2014. so didnt see this reply.

Mr barot said that he disliked the twist in the remake coz it messed with the basic concept of the film. i.e village idiot vs city criminals.

also as for the climax, he originally had written a very serious fight, but the producers insisted that the movie was getting too much and the audience needed some comedy, since he didnt have any comedy as such, they changed the climax (against his wishes)

This ain't that Kinda movie!

i wonder why he did not make many more films since Don which was very successfull. pehaps he was content with one mega hit and then he decided to semi retire.

reply

So, why did he hate the new film? Anyway, how is he doing now?

reply

hello, the post is 7 years old! I havent had any contact with him since.

but at the time he was one of the creative heads in the Sahara TV channel which has since closed.

as for why he hated the new one ?

simple reason (his thoughts, not mine) they killed off the innocent young man within minutes and the audience is made to root for the villain by trickery.
I can sort of understand his point of view, the original WAS all about how this young village bumpkin uses every trick up his book to survive in the harsh world of the mafia, but this new one completely loses that coz this guy is the real don himself.

but the new one needed a twist or the film would have flopped.
