I loved this movie.......anyone else have a heart?

This movie is a classic in the sense that it was a precursor to what is now considered the extended family! Does anyone know where I can find a copy of this on DVD OR VHS....please advise!

Glad to have seen your post (and to know I'm not the only one who ever saw this movie -- or even appreciated it, for that matter)

Just tonight (3/21/06), I was flipping through channels and came across some 80's movie with Perry King & Loni Anderson. Within a few seconds (just by seeing and listening to Perry King), this movie instantly resurfaced in my mind.

I first saw it when I was 13 in 1981 - it was while I was babysitting for a couple who actually had Pay Channels (a treat for any 13 year old who didn't have access to pay channels at home :-).

It aired on this particular pay channel numerous times, so I got to see it 4 or 5 times during a 6 week time period.

I haven't seen it since then, but would love to watch it again.

I even realized that I remembered the song of the same title (I think I even taped the audio by putting a cheap tape recorder close to TV speaker, just so I could learn it).

I actually remember all of the lyrics of the song (and I'm shocked by this fact, considering that the entire song came into my mind within 5 minutes of just reminiscing about this movie, which I haven't seen in 25 years!!):

Here are the lyrics:

A Different Story

Two Strangers
I wonder if they know
What it's like to love somebody like you
To have a friend and a lover
On a cold and lonely night
To overcome the fear of being strangers
Who touch and then unwind
All the secrets we can let each other find
Life will be a Different Story
We've never really known before

So sing while the music plays
Dance while we feel this way
Let tomorrow be until tomorrow

Let tomorrow be until tomorrow

I'll be sure to post something in the event I ever find it for sale.

Hey, just2happyhounds, thanks for posting those lyrics! And thanks, Bergdorf, for starting this post in the first place.

In trolling for obscure films I remember from my childhood, I was relieved to find that at least two other people remember "A Different Story."

I saw it on HBO in the late '70s or early '80s. I remember liking it at the time, but I'm sure the idea of two homosexuals being "cured" by falling in love with each other would be picketed by gay activists these days.

Maybe that's not such a bad thing, but Perry King and Meg Foster are to be commended for taking roles that would probably terrify most actors.

I think a handful of folks would buy it, but probably not enough to turn a profit. I'm surprised it was even released on VHS.

It's a pity how these little cultural icons get forgotten because of economic realities, but no amount of Internet petitions can change that.

In what book did you read about this? Was it Vito Russo's "Celluloid Closet," by chance?

it's coming out on DVD on July 25th from Trinity Home Entertainment.
Great movie!-Amazon.com is taking preorders already.

Greetings fellow A DIFFERENT STORY fans. I remember liking this little good-hearted low budget movie enough to go back and see it again in the theatre. It may have had something to do with Meg Foster.

I have a color lobby card for the first person who would like to receive it... not in perfect shape but it's been kicking around in my files since 1978. Send me a PM with a mailing address if you are interested.

I just checked and there are a handful of related items (One sheets, photos, ads, etc) on eBay if you are interested.

I love this movie!

I'm an unpublished novelist/unproduced screenwriter (I actually had a script in early preproduction stages with an independent studio about 20 years ago, before the financial backers got cold feet and pulled the plug), and my first reaction to this movie was, "Damn! I wish I had the balls to write a script like that one!"

This Post was going so well until ... I'd just like to say that as a gay man, I really enjoyed this film and I do know of serveral couples just like this. It's not about equipment ... it about love. The love of my life is a woman and we've never had a problem sexually but there are some gays who wouldn't be open to the experience. I would never say the word "cured" but there are exceptions to the rules. I think gay people get upset about situations like this because so many people have dishonestly tried to turn themselves into something they are not. In this movie (and the couples I've mentioned earlier) are about starting from a real honest point as friends and evolving naturally. And, I would also like to say that i've seen straight people of the same sex who were great friends and took it to a new level and in no way were gay. It's about the heart and what you are open to.

gmonte33,

The film's message is NOT that homosexuals can be cured! That statement is asinine! Do you really believe the makers of the film hate gays and lesbians, and felt the need to make anti-gay propaganda? Hell no! They wanted to make an unusual love story for an open-minded audience (hence the title "A Different Story.") The films MESSAGE concerns taking the time to learn and love whoever happens to be there for you.

You were offended by this high-spirited, slightly innocent, charming movie? That's hilarious! Open-mindedness and not being so uptight are a couple of key elements for enjoying life. You don't need to enjoy this film, but at least be open-minded!

You can continue to hate this movie if you like, but at least get its true message right!

"A Different Story" is available on DVD from Trinity Home Entertainment. I picked up a brand new copy this evening at Suncoast for $5.99. It looks as though it's only being released in full screen, which is a shame because I like widescreen.
