So Bad It's good

This movie is so bad it's good. I would have loved to see this movie on MST3K.

I agree. "Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell" is a real howler (pun intended) of a so-awful-it's-downright-awesome schlocky 70's made-for-TV fright flick. I especially loved the scene where the demonic doggie almost makes Richard Crenna shove his hand into a wildly spinning lawnmower blade. Funny stuff, man!

there's a new book on amazon.com called TELEVISION FRIGHT FILMS OF THE 1970S that talks about this film.

With a title like "Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell," how could it be anything but horrible in an excellent sense?

No doubt about it, the entire premise of this movie is very silly, but overall I thought they pulled it off quite well. So yes, I admit that I really liked it. The demon dog special effects were hokey, but I guess they were working with a very limited budget.

But as laughable as the movie is, there are some creepy scenes. The black mass ritual in the beginning may raise a few hairs. Also, the part when the father casts the reflection of his daughter in a mirror as she's under the dog's spell is frightening.

I also liked the fact that the film reflected the "evil on the rise in society" theme like so many other horror movies did in the 70s. Issues such as the decline in family values and corruption in politics (the son's victory for class president is likely an allegory for the Nixon administration) were brought up.

Yes I agree. Excellent film, utterly awful. But it it consistently entertaning and I love it, and I love Crenna as well.

I have yet to pursue the special features (I'm still in a state of shock that there is an entire second disc of them), but I will do so soon. From reading other posts here they sound great.

This isn't bad. The story and idea alone is a masterpiece. I applaud it.

I enjoy this movie, too. I've seen it multiple times and never get tired of it. I only wish it had more scenes with Martine Beswick. But other than that, I have no complaints.
