De Niro most beautifully nuanced performance

Besides the obvious intense scenes. De Niro gave a incredible performance here just by subtle gestures alone. His facial reactions and his eyes says so much without even saying a word. He really shows why he is one of the greatest actors.

Could very well be his best performance.

@mxzt.I completely agree with you.Christopher Walken did a good job. However Robert De Niro's performance had a huge emotional impact on me.He was great in this movie. He's definitely one of my favorite actors.

That's a good way to describe Deniro and what makes him so good in all of his dramas. He's the Best there ever was....in my opinion.

Totally agree, its things like this that make him one of the best ever, (if not the best).

I agree. I thought his sorta shell-shocked shyness was so well done. Not wanting to be in the spotlight because he survived the war. I also thought his interactions with Linda, just walking along or talking with her or looking longingly at the photo of her in his wallet were really achingly beautiful. Also, his interactions with Nick, Stevie, Stan, Axel, and everyone in the town were simply beautiful. Finally, his scene of shooting over the head of the deer was so well done.

A great movie with great performances across the board.

It was a great performance. They were all terrific. Such a good film, I'm so glad people are still discovering it. Christopher Walken was and is a magnetic actor, Meryl Streep so moving, John Cazale unforgettable. DeNiro too of course.

Completely agree, It's my favorite performance by him. I'm not a huge DeNiro fan in general,He is perfect in this role though and it's his most underrated role in my opinion. He doesn't over act, or seem arrogant like some of his roles. He should have won an Oscar for this instead of Raging Bull in my opinion. I wish he would have done more roles like this.

De Niro gives a beautiful performance here and I think he really understood his character of Michael and his motives. This guy was a genuine man and De Niro knew how to shade and layer him. It is under the surface a complex performance; but one that appears to be expressed so easily and naturally that you can forget that he is acting. I think the end result and overall quality of this film, can be laid at the feet of Michael Cimino. While he proved later he had an ego as big as a mountain and this was his downfall, he certainly did an impressive and commendable job here. I like most of his films.

This is why the first hour that some people consider boring is SO important. You see how much of a changed man he is after the war.

Quiet and introverted characters aren't appreciated enough. I believe this's the main reason why De Niro didn't had the chance to won a Oscar for his performance at Deer Hunter.
